Fantasy, Desire, and Conflict –
Why Did Harald Kill Himself?

The gap between fantasy and desire is what most often gets people into trouble. But what about the gap between inner conflicts and the conflicts that arise between people in society? This question has guided our selection of films from the Filmform archive. The subtitle of the program, “Why Did Harald Kill Himself”, is taken from the film Förvandla Sverige by Jan Lindqvist & Stefan Jarl from 1974. In addition to this film, we are showing works by Maja Borg, Juan-Pedro Fabra, Roxy Farhat, Salad Hilowle, and Peter Weiss.

– Sinziana Ravini & Fredrik Svensk

Sinziana Ravini and Fredrik Svensk are editors-in-chief of Paletten Art Journal. Paletten is a cultural journal for contemporary art, founded in 1940. Its ambition is to critically examine the conditions and functions of art in our time.

The screening is arranged with support from Stockholms Stad. Filmform is supported by the Ministry of Culture through the Arts Grants Committee and the Swedish Arts Council

Pori Film Festival x Filmform

Several titles distributed by Filmform will be part of the programme Experi-Mentalities at the 2021 edition of Pori Film Festival. The event will take place between 25-28 November and the programme has been curated by Timo Menke.

The combined screening and installation program Experi–Mentalities for Pori film festival 2021 is proposing an intersectional mix of circus, hideout and laboratory as a hybrid cinematic space for experimentation and experimentality. Rather than a black box, Experi-Mentalities stages closed and open spaces with a diversity of moving image works from the Swedish film region featuring illusions, prototypes and stunts, as well as failures, mishaps and dysfunctions. The experi-mental approach brings together elements of experiment and mentality in the sense of cinema as an ongoing trial and error, hypothesis and proof – from experimental procedures adopted from the natural sciences, exploratory approaches in filmmaking, and the testing of new forms of social organisation, while playing with the “experimental” as historical genre of art and film. The rationale of the institutionally controlled experiment is set against or within retinal experiments and mental explorations, confronting the all-too-known and unknown, searching for new realities, truths and futures leading to different or enigmatic forms of knowledge.

Labor/Life

Three films, three women, and three different perspectives on labor and life. Through the works of Eva Linder, Theresa Traore Dahlberg and Gunvor Nelson we get to experience brief but deep portrayals of three women’s lives. Ranging in medium, location and tonality the films speak about matters big and small: humor, family, pride, self-realization, the daily grind and the labor of pushing forward life itself. Anna Linder’s work 13 Related Sewing Machines is shown on loop in connection with the physical programme. The work reflects on women’s repetitive and invisible work and the declining use of sewing machines in everyday life today.

FILMFORM RE:VIEW – Malin Wahlberg

Sophie Vuković, Untitled Abisko, 2020

Combined digital & physical screening on October 20th, 7PM CEST

In the second edition of FILMFORM RE:VIEW, film scholar Malin Wahlberg has tracked several documentary fictions within the Filmform collection. Through the prism of the French philosopher Jacques Rancière’s term, documentary fiction, five portrait emerge in an area of tension between the imaginary and the concrete – with enactments as a truth seeking artistic method. FILMFORM RE:VIEW is a format where external professionals and organizations from spheres of culture or research are invited to botanize in Filmform’s collection. Documentary Fictions

Five portraits of people and haunted places, invoked cinematographically in the present, in the past, or in the not so promising (imaginary?) future of our planet. As viewers we are enrolled in enactments where the making of the film is also partly its motif. These artists find unique ways to direct their attention at the possible dreams and desires awaken by the intensity of time passing, of touch, or the presence of absence invoked by photographic traces. However, the search at hand is never disconnected from the complexity of the world, and the conditions and predominant power relations of social and cultural life. Documentary fiction is a notion borrowed from the philosopher Jacques Rancière, who argues that memory cannot be separated from imagination, that “memory is the work [oeuvre] of fiction”. In contrast to the popular conception of “fiction” meaning “pretty story or evil lie”, the original Latin term fingere doesn’t mean “to feign” but “to forge”.

– Malin Wahlberg

Malin Wahlberg is a Professor in Cinema Studies at the Department of Media Studies at Stockholm University. The screening is arranged with support from Stockholms Stad. Filmform is supported by the Ministry of Culture through the Arts Grants Committee and the Swedish Arts Council

FILMFORM RE:VIEW – Nathan Hamelberg

Combined digital & physical screening on September 15th, 7PM CEST

The opening programme of the screenings series FILMFORM RE:VIEW reflects the hollowness of the urban space with the Swedish capital city as the cultural battleground. Writer Nathan Hamelberg has selected a set of films that on the one hand are documents from another time – mainly with a focus on the space for youth (or lack thereof) in Stockholm – and on the other hand are wholly new to most people. FILMFORM RE:VIEW is a format where external professionals and organizations from spheres of culture or research are invited to botanize in Filmform’s collection. Starting off from their specific areas of interest and questions a film programme is curated and thereafter presented as an open screening at Filmform.

This programme is shown as a physical screening at Filmform on Svarvargatan 2 (Stockholm, Sweden) and simultaneously live streamed at the Filmform website.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the current pandemic special restrictions apply for those who wish to attend the physical screening. Admission is reduced to a maximum of 15 people. The ticket price is 50 kr. Hollow Stockholm

What emotions seep from the margins of a metropole? From the capital of Sweden? How do new generations discover cracks to slide in through and into a well-planned and well-ordered city? How did one become one of the people in a society you had yet to fit into? I’ve selected a set of films that on the one hand are documents from another time – mainly with a focus on the space for youth (or lack thereof) in Stockholm – and on the other hand are wholly new to most people. What can art film and documentary film say about identity and space and the dominant view of youth in society? How are youth seen – or depicted – in optimistic film reels of yesterday, and what is absent in the pictures of anti-social youth?”

– Nathan Hamelberg

Nathan Hamelberg is a writer obsessed with urban issues and a background in violence prevention work amongst youth. The screening is arranged with support from Stockholms Stad. Filmform is supported by the Ministry of Culture through the Arts Grants Committee and the Swedish Arts Council

Dennis Cooper & Zac Farley, Permanent Green Light, 2018, 90 min

About the film:

A young disabled guy wants to explode. He wants to do it in public. He thinks the fact that it will also end his life is useful for the act’s effect but is otherwise beside the point. He’s not suicidal. He has no ideology. He’s not interested in “heaven” or in going there. He doesn’t want people to misinterpret his explosion as a suicide. He doesn’t want people to misinterpret the explosion as his death.

About the artists:

Dennis Cooper
Complex yet ruthlessly clear, Dennis Cooper’s (b. 1953, US) prose recounts the emotional and erotic lives of troubled teenagers. His characteristic ability to combine cruelty with tenderness, sadism with anxiety, has made him one of his generation’s essential voices. In addition to his film collaborations with Zac Farley, he is known for novels such as the five novel quintology The George Miles Cycle (1989 -2000), The Sluts (2008), The Marbled Swarm (2014), and I Wished (forthcoming, 2021). He has written widely on art, film, music, and literature, and has been a Contributing Editor of Artforum since the late 90s. Since moving from Los Angeles to Paris in 2005, he has written nine theatre pieces for the director/choreographer Gisèle Vienne and composed a series of innovative GIF novels, most recently Zac’s Drug Binge (2020).

Zac Farley
Zac Farley’s (b. 1988 US/FR) films and videos embrace confusion as a kind of truth and thus strive to visualise the most ineffable emotions. Through careful editing and framing, they weave analogies between bodies, landscapes and abstractions. In addition to the feature films he made together with Dennis Cooper, including Like Cattle Towards Glow (2015), Permanent Green Light (2018) and Room Temperature (forthcoming), he is currently collaborating with director/choreographer Gisèle Vienne on a forthcoming feature film, Klara Kraus, and, with writer/curator Sabrina Tarasoff and Cooper, on a virtual “haunted house” project to be premiered at The Pinault Foundation in Paris in late October.

FILMFORM RE:VIEW – coyote

Combined digital & physical screening on June 10th, 7PM CEST

After being heavily postponed it is with great pride that Filmform are able to present the final programme in last years edition of FILMFORM RE:VIEW. For this film programme, the multidisciplinary artist collective coyote have explored the gesamtkunstwerk’s potential with the artist Åke Karlung’s growing installation Glo-Babels Torn (The Tower of GloBabel) from 1977–79 at Moderna Museet in Stockholm, as their starting point. Through its many counter images and rhythmic overlapping, the programme becomes a celebration to the unfinished and a mirror image of Filmform’s ever growing archive.

GloBabel

The title is taken from Åke Karlung’s notorious and unfinished GloBabels Torn (The Tower of GloBabel), constructed at Moderna Museet’s screening room Lilla filmsalen between 1977–1979, which simultaneously used as the artist’s studio and workshop. Two years later the work travelled to Paris and Centre Pompidou for the exhibition SEXTANT, presented by the museum director Pontus Hultén. GloBabels Torn functions as a portal to the film programme; where Karlung’s Gesamtkunstwerk of ”image, sound, movement and words” becomes a rhythmic reflection of the selected films. Glo-babel’s attack on the emerging pop culture, cultural establishment and consumer society acts as a leitmotif for the programme’s six films. Like in the Bible, Karlung’s tower was never completed, instead it became a symbol of humanity’s desperate search for belonging and community in a world of babel of tongues, arbitrariness and alienation. GloBabel is an incomplete film programme of an archive of reactivated moving images which, as Åke Karlung’s work, never will be final.

Press Release on May 17th, 2021 by Berlinale Forum:

The connections between culture in general, cinema in particular, society and racism are currently the subject of controversial discussion. The Berlinale Forum steps into the debate by presenting the film and discussion series “Fiktionsbescheinigung. 16 Cinematic Perspectives on Germany” an experiment in shared curatorial responsibility that puts a spotlight on a chapter of German film production that has been unfairly neglected.

The Berlinale Forum harbours a keen interest in the areas of film history yet to be properly illuminated and is always looking for new ways to think about the relationship between cinema and society. Both interests come together in this year’s special programme “Fiktionsbescheinigung. 16 Cinematic Perspectives on Germany”. The film and discussion series being put on in collaboration with SİNEMA TRANSTOPIA is dedicated to the work of Black directors and directors of color in Germany.

The films were selected by the curators Enoka Ayemba, Karina Griffith, Jacqueline Nsiah, Biene Pilavci and Can Sungu. Eight programmes consisting of features and shorts bring together works from across four decades, including Tour Abroad by Ayşe Polat (1999), Gölge by Sofoklis Adamidis and Sema Poyraz (1980) and In the Name of Scheherazade or the First Beer Garden in Tehran by Narges Kalhor (2019). Some of the films pick up on the experience of migration, addressing it directly or in more mediated fashion, just as others allow themselves the freedom of no longer taking it seriously. While Mala Reinhardt’s The Second Attack (2018) grapples with the structural racism of the majority society in unflinching fashion and indicts the failure of the authorities in the case of NSU terrorism, Visar Morina’s Exile (2020) is primarily interested in the subcutaneous effects that the experience of racism has on an individual. Sheri Hagen’s At Second Glance (2012) makes specific Black experiences visible but not in such a way that they determine an individual.

The five curators explain their selection in a statement: “The series sees itself as a snapshot of an ongoing, self-determined process of intervention and protest. Each of the films functions as a suggestion as to how the white German gaze can be countered with diverse, intersectional perspectives, with all of them having one thing in common: their own visual and textual practice of testimony from within, not from the margins.”

The films can first be seen from June 9 to 30 on the streaming platform of Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Art (https://www.arsenal-3-berlin.de/en/). The discussion programme, which includes talks with the filmmakers, experimental, interactive formats, panels with scholars, festival programmers, actors and the curators, a keynote speech by scholar Kevin B. Lee and a lecture by filmmaker Biene Pilavci, will be taking place online. The film programme will be shown in August at SİNEMA TRANSTOPIA’s (https://bi-bak.de/en/bi-bakino) outdoor space.

The 67th festival edition goes online for the second time

Festival moves its projected on-site programmes online

In 2020, Oberhausen was the first German film festival forced to go online – with great success – by the Corona pandemic. Now the decision has been taken to go online-only once again in 2021. From 1 to 10 May, more than 400 short films, over 190 of them in the eight competitions alone, will be streamed for audiences and professionals.

“We are going online to reach the largest possible audience for the films and to guarantee the greatest security for our audience. We had to make this decision, like many other cultural institutions, against the background of a lack of reliable guidelines for opening up cultural institutions and staging cultural events on the part of German politics,” says festival director Lars Henrik Gass, explaining the decision. “However, we hope to be able to reach a worldwide audience again with an outstanding programme that we would never have reached in Oberhausen alone, and to contribute to the democratisation of film culture.”

The original plan was for a hybrid festival: while the online competitions scheduled from 1 to 4 May will be presented as planned, most of the programmes planned on site from 5 to 10 May are now shifting online, including the five traditional competitions of the Festival.

ANIMAL LOVE

Borrowing it’s title from Ulrich Seidl’s infamous feature film from 1996, this programme evokes questions of control, communication and desire through the relationship between humans and animals. In the opening films by Marte Aas and Ilona Huss Walin, the anthropocentric perspectives start shifting and finally become muddled. Here, animals are seen mourning, remembering, observing human culture and behaviour instead of the other way around as later imagined in Elisa Gleize’s virtual zoo and Hillside Project’s search of a disappearing blue bird. Nowhere are perhaps the ideas of natural behaviour as exposed as in the human understanding of sexuality which echoes throughout the programme in several works. On the more symbolic level – in Lova Hamilton’s oral domestication of a rooster along with Frederic Moffet’s exploration of a natural reserve-cum-human cruising ground on a deserted air base. A more direct and performative method can be seen in Joanna Rytel’s confrontative striptease for monkeys as well as Rachel Echenberg’s dissolvement into a flock of pigeons. Through all these various renditions of control and identification, animal and human relationships are stripped down to the bone, skin, feathers and fur.

Conversation Between Collections

Through the screening format Conversation Between Collections, two distributors of artists moving images are joined to shed lights on each other’s collections and organizations. With a specific theme as their starting point, the two distributors select works from both their own and the others catalogue and present it in a public film programme. As a result, international tendencies in artists subjects and methods are linked and historical layers are revealed. The works come into dialogue and unexpected encounters open up to new understandings of the arts and ourselves.

A Penny for Your Thoughts, video, 2006 (18:40 min) av Dror Feiler och Gunilla Sköld Feiler

Fredag 26/3 Score och A Penny for Your Thoughts
Lördag 27/3 Score och A Penny for Your Thoughts
Söndag 28/3 Score och A Penny for Your Thoughts

Torsdag 1/4 TBA
Fredag 2/4 TBA

Utveckling? Utveckling? (1971), 6:00 min

Since 2018, the project “re-selected – Film History as Print History” has focused as part of “Archive außer sich” on selected films from the analogue holdings of the Archive of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, examining film history as the history of individual prints. Entitled Odd Ones Out, “re-selected” presents films on arsenal 3 in March whose prints from the archive of the festival have rarity status. Some of them were therefore digitised in the course of the project.

On 18 March at 6 pm there will be an online discussion moderated by Nikolaus Perneczky with Tobias Hering, the curator of “re-selected”. It will be broadcast live on Arsenal’s Youtube channel and questions can be asked via the chat.
