In the video Penthouse Idle (2000) Tobias Bernstrup uses the Machinima technique (machine + cinema) – a style of animation that uses the graphic engine of video games to create videos and films. By modifying the contents of an existing game Tobias creates his own video game universe where we enter a penthouse with a swimming pool. We meet the artist’s own transgendered avatar and other animated queer characters as they sip on their virtual drinks.
The walkthrough in the mall is accompanied by a gloomy electronic soundtrack composed by the artist. Like in several of Bernstrup’s works from this period of time he explores the point at which the real and the virtual meet.
