Flat Dog Town
BY
Max Andersson

Stopmotion documentary capturing one of the most mysterious and stunning creatures of the city, the evasive Flat Dog, offering us a rare insight into its hidden world and fascinating habits.

The Flat Dog is a common but insufficiently researched wild breed of dog which is presumed to have existed in the immediate vicinity of humans for a very long time. The production method of the film, resting on the combination of super 8 cameras from the 1970’s and long expired film stock of the legendary Kodachrome variety, allows us to experience face-to-face encounters with an endangered species, struggling for survival in its natural habitat right beneath our feet.

Shot during the final weeks of the year 2010, shortly before the world’s last Kodachromelab shut down the developing machines forever, the film moreover represents a unique document of a lost Berlin. The urban environments caught on the now-extinct film emulsion have since almost invariably disappeared without a trace. The fate of the dogs remains unknown, however the supposed adaptability of the animal would suggest a continued widespread presence in metropolitan areas.

With original music by Stefan Agaton, who also created the score for Max Andersson’s classic film shorts Spik-Bebis and Varför är det så mycket svart, and Mikael Nilzén.
