One of the Lads is about power relations and reflects upon the different kinds of rituals, strategies and codes that emerge in the defining of ‘us’ and ‘the other’. The video refers to the ongoing ‘struggle’ in our lives to be part of something. The feeling of exclusion is painful and our strategies to attain status are often in conflict with our own self-respect. The images that I portray refer to childhood memories of grown up men. In this case, the physical punishments and the psychological humiliations older boys exposed them to as kids or what they did themselves to those lower down on the ‘ladder’. This was a world of blurred borders, where play often was brutal reality.
