The title Hundekälte (Nächstes Jahr wirds noch kälter) is a quote from Alfred Döblin’s novel Berlin – Alexanderplatz from 1929. The starting point for making this video, was also in fact reading this remarkable novel. It tells the story of the ‘working class anti-hero’ Franz Biberkopfs struggle to ‘get something more out of life than bread and butter’. But just as important as Franz himself, is the part played by the city in itself: The almost explosively expanding Berlin of the late 1920’s. The novels main theme: The individual in mass-society and the endless struggle of people stuck in a system to free themselves of its restraints, pretty much encircles my own themes.
