Anna Linderstam is a Swedish artist (b 1978). Her work revolves around transcendence, physicality and presence. Sequences of events are condensed into expressions of emotion, through photography and video. Taking the body as a responsive form Linderstam sets up manipulating circumstances, in which she requests her sitters to engage in a pose or experience that will take the body from one physical or psychological state to another. She has used hypnosis, blindness and physical exertion to capture an elusive process of “becoming” whilst simultaneously highlighting the subject’s act of “giving oneself over” to the photographic gaze. A fluctuation between the intimate and the voyeuristic is essential in this conversation between tender and brutal.
Anna Linderstam has studied at the School of Photography in Gothenburg, the University for Creative Arts in Farnham, England, and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm.
